Parrots (Y1)
Phonics & Spellings
We follow the Little Wandle Phonics scheme for our Phonics lessons for 20 minutes each day where we learn new sounds and practice reading these sounds in words and sentences. In our Phonics lessons we also learn how to spell words which contain our new sounds and our tricky words.
During the Summer term, the children complete a statutory Phonics Screening Check.
English
Our English work is usually based around a book. We learn traditional stories, read stories from other cultures, write lists, letters, diaries, instructions and learn poetry. Children are always encouraged to talk about what they are going to write – if they can’t say it, they can’t write it!
We listen to children read in groups at least twice per week and sometimes read 1:1 with an adult. We also encourage children to read at home as much as possible.
Maths
We follow White Rose Maths for our daily maths lessons. Throughout the year, the children learn about numbers to 100, addition and subtraction, shape, basic multiplication and division (through the use of arrays and groups), fractions, geometry, time and money. Most maths lessons involve practical resources to aid the children’s learning. At the end of each week, we have a Big Maths test for the children to practise their instant recall of number facts. The children look forward to the tests and try to beat their previous score.
Continous provision
There are also opportunities for children to develop their skills through play within the classroom. We have areas for children to write, draw, read, use their maths skills, develop fine motor skills and build models with the construction toys.
