Maths

At Cambridge Primary School, we recognise that mathematics is an essential life skill and a key part of our children's education.
Our mathematics curriculum is designed to ensure that all pupils develop a strong understanding of mathematical concepts, become confident problem solvers and appreciate the relevance of mathematics in everyday life.

We believe that every child can succeed in mathematics. Through high-quality teaching and carefully planned learning experiences, we aim to develop positive attitudes towards maths so that children view it as an enjoyable, meaningful and rewarding subject. We strive to create an environment where pupils feel confident to explore ideas, make mistakes and learn from them.

Our curriculum follows the structure of the White Rose Maths scheme, which provides a clear and progressive sequence of learning. This approach supports the development of fluency, reasoning and problem-solving skills while ensuring pupils build a deep and secure understanding of mathematical concepts over time.

Teaching is underpinned by the Concrete–Pictorial–Abstract (CPA) approach. This approach allows pupils to explore mathematical ideas through practical resources and visual representations before moving towards more abstract methods. By using concrete materials, pictorial models and symbolic representations, all learners are supported to access the curriculum and continue to make progress in their mathematical understanding.

We recognise that secure knowledge of multiplication facts is fundamental to success in mathematics. To support this, pupils regularly practise their times tables using Times Tables Rock Stars. This engaging and motivating platform helps children develop fluency and recall of multiplication and division facts, with the aim that all pupils know their times tables up to 12 × 12 by the end of Year 4.

In addition, children complete weekly assessments using Big Maths CLIC and SAFE. These short, focused tests help develop and monitor pupils’ mental arithmetic skills, as well as assess their understanding of the wider mathematics curriculum. The results support teachers in identifying next steps in learning and ensuring that children continue to build strong mathematical foundations.

Our mathematics curriculum aims for pupils to:
  • Develop a deep understanding of mathematical concepts and the relationships between numbers.
  • Become fluent in fundamental mathematical skills, including mental calculation and recall of key number facts.
  • Reason mathematically, explaining their thinking clearly and justifying their methods.
  • Solve problems confidently, applying their mathematical knowledge to a range of contexts.
  • Recognise patterns and connections within mathematics and across other areas of the curriculum.
  • Build resilience, independence and confidence when tackling challenging mathematical tasks.
Through engaging lessons and practical experiences, pupils are encouraged to explore mathematical ideas, use a range of strategies and represent their thinking in different ways. Our teaching ensures that all children are appropriately supported and challenged so that every learner can make progress. Ultimately, our aim is for every child to leave Cambridge Primary School with the mathematical knowledge, skills and confidence they need to succeed in the next stage of their education and in their future lives.
