Giraffes (Y2)
Phonics/Spelling
Daily spellings and phonics lessons are for 20 minutes. We follow the Year 2 Little Wandle Spelling Units and using Spelling Shed to learn the Year 2 exception words. The class enjoy these sessions and they are given opportunities to read, write, play games and apply what they have learnt. We are also using daily sentences to put our phonics into practise and develop our handwriting – keeping small letters small and tall letters tall. All children are encouraged use Spelling Shed at home to practise
English
Our English lessons are usually based on a fiction or non-fiction text. We are always very excited about our new books and love to share our thoughts and ideas through discussion, paired work, role play and through our writing. In class we get totally absorbed in stories which helps us to produce some brilliant creative writing.
The class are encouraged to read as much as they can. They love listening to stories and they are also encouraged to read aloud in groups, independently and during shared reading. The love of books is always a key priority in our class.
Mathematics
Each day we begin our morning practising our arithmetic skills focusing on getting quicker at adding, subtracting and multiplying. For Maths we follow the White Rose maths curriculum, developing our understanding of different areas of maths using practical equipment to support our learning. We will begin to use TT Rockstars to practise our 2, 5 and 10 times tables and take part in challenges across school. We encourage the children to login and use this at home too.
Other areas of the curriculum
We have 2 PE lessons each week, including swimming
in the Spring Term. We learn science, history, geography, DT and art in blocks
of learning and use quizzes and review weeks to consolidate understanding. In Design
and Technology the children develop their sewing skills to make a puppet. In
science children develop their knowledge of plants, animals and materials
whilst developing key skills such as making observations and drawing
conclusions. In history we learn about significant people and events in history
such as The Great Fire of London, Neil Armstrong and Florence Nightingale. In
Geography we learn about the Amazon Rainforest and our local area, taking several
trips to different places in the local area to complete fieldwork activities.
In Art we study different artists including Giuseppe Arcimboldo and Andy
Goldsworthy, producing collages and using paint to create colour and shade.
