History
We aim to inspire children’s curiosity about
different times and events in the past and how these events have changed the
lives of our ancestors.
At Cambridge Primary School we follow
the CUSP scheme of work which builds on previous knowledge, allowing children
to make links and connections between different topics. It is carefully
scaffolded using the “I do, we do, you do” approach to encourage the children
to become independent learners and it gives the children the opportunity to
learn and use higher level vocabulary.
The following is taught within each
of the year groups:
Year 1 – Toys past and present, James
Ramsden (significant person in local history).
Year 2 – Significant people such as
David Attenborough, Neil Armstrong, Florence Nightingale, the Great Fire of
London.
Year 3 – Stone Age, Bronze Age, Iron
Age, Ancient Egypt.
Year 4 – Ancient Greece, the Romans.
Year 5 – Anglo Saxons, Vikings, Mayan
civilisation.
Year 6 – Local history study of the
Barrow Blitz and Battle of Britain, British monarchy.
To supplement the children’s learning we often try
to include external visits or visitors. We also plan special events to remember
important events in history.
