Science
At Cambridge we recognise that science is an important subject for developing the children’s understanding of the world. We aim to learn key knowledge while developing scientific skills, encouraging children to ask questions and be inquisitive about how the world around them works. Children’s knowledge is built upon each year and therefore quizzing and recapping of previous learning is crucial in ensuring children have a solid understanding of key information which they will use not only in science but other areas of the curriculum such as Design & Technology. It also provides excellent opportunities to put key learning from maths into practise. Vocabulary plays an important part in the children’s understanding of science so each lesson will involve learning a new key word. Children are giving the opportunity to complete lots of their learning through practical investigations
In EYFS science is studied through the children learning about their world and investigating questions from their experiences. For example; Why does chocolate melt? How can we look after a plant?
In KS1 children focus on learning about materials, plants and animals. They begin to learn the key skills of classification and observation to record their scientific ideas. They will begin to make predications and give reasons.
In KS2 the areas are studied in a more focused way with children being taught about light, forces, electricity and chemical changes. The children learn to record observations and reading with more accuracy using a range of equipment. They will learn about variables and fair testing. They will begin to draw conclusions and suggest further questions to investigate. They will also understand that some knowledge needs to be gained from research and how to use reliable data and sources.
The children take part in many enrichment activities both inside and outside of school throughout their school journey, such as visits to STEM events and enjoying science shows in school.
