PSHE and Citizenship

PSHE is a very important part of the curriculum at Cambridge Primary School. We aim to prepare all children at our school for the opportunities, responsibilities and experience of life.

We strive to give them the knowledge, skills and understanding to:

  • develop their confidence and responsibility
  • make the most of their abilities
  • prepare them to play an active role as citizens
  • promote a healthy and safe lifestyle
  • develop good relationships and respect differences between people
  • think about and learn from, others’ ideas and opinions.

We use the MyHappyMind structure to develop our PSHE lessons and this helps children understand themselves, their emotions and how the brain works. Through this, children are taught strategies that enable them to cope with difficulties and make choices that allow them to become responsible citizens in our local community and the wider world.

In addition to this, we also use 1Decision resources which are adapted to the needs of each group. This allows children to use the knowledge they have gained from MyHappyMind and apply it in a decision-making cotext. In this programme, pupils watch videos of children their own age meeting various ‘real-life’ scenarios. They are then offered different options and discuss the merits and implications before watching these play out.

Children in Years 5 and 6 are also taught basic First Aid skills using the 1Decision programme, allowing them to understand a range of medical emergencies and how they can respond in a safe and appropriate manner.

Over the year, pupils will cover:
